The 7 Don’ts of Pet Heat Safety for a Safe and Fun Summer

It's summertime, which means more fun in the sun! We know you can’t wait to wear your trendy summer apparel and go on amazing beach trips, but what about your furry friend?

The ASPCA says the summer heat can be more dangerous for pets than you think. It can cause pet heatstroke, among other fatal conditions. Unfortunately, our furry friends can't tell us when they're too hot, and it's easy to get absorbed with your summer plans and forget about that.

Take this awareness as a step toward pet heat safety. All it takes is a few simple precautions that will keep your pet safe and healthy during the hottest months of the year. So let’s learn about the things you shouldn't do to keep your pet safe in the summer!

7 Things You Shouldn't Do to Your Pet in the Summer

Knowing the dos to keep your pet safe from the summer heat is necessary, but the don'ts are just as vital. Some of these might seem like common sense, but once we get caught up in the summer fun, we might forget about our furry friends. So we’re here to provide you with seven tips on what you shouldn't do to your pets in the summer.

1. Don't Leave Your Pet Unattended in Vehicles

Let’s say you want to make a quick stop at a nearby store. You think it'll only take a few minutes, so you leave your pet in the car. Unfortunately, those few minutes can become longer and life-threatening really quickly: a pet stuck in a hot car is fatal, so this is a big no-no. Don’t leave your pets behind.

2. Don't Let Your Pets Linger on Hot Surfaces

Beware of hot surfaces, especially in summers. Hot pavements like asphalt can heat up your furry friend's body quickly and burn their paw pads. Thus, avoid taking them on outdoor walks during the hottest times of the day. If you really have to, wet the surface they will walk on or feel it with your hands first to see if it's okay for your pet.

3. Don't Assume Your Pet Is a Good Swimmer

Some pets are good swimmers, especially dogs. However, not all dogs are good at it; some might get tired easily and drown. Moreover, water is unpredictable, so you can't leave them unsupervised in pools or bodies of water.

Always watch out for them and prepare flotation devices for emergencies. Alternatively, you can just shower them.

4. Don't Wait for Signs of Dehydration

It's good to be aware of dehydration signs, but don't wait for them to manifest. Instead, focus on prevention to avoid reaching a point where it's too late. Know their daily water needs and provide them with enough fresh water throughout the day, especially if they're spending time outdoors.

5. Don't Skip Shaded Breaks

When you're out and about in the summer heat with your pet, give them adequate shaded breaks with water intake. Pets can also get sunburns, and overdoing their outdoor exercise is a big no-no in hot weather. So look for some pet-friendly parks, beaches, and other outdoor spaces with lots of trees to take that much-needed break.

6. Don't Think All Pets Have the Same Heat Tolerance

Just like people, pets react to heat differently. Some breeds are more susceptible to heat hazards than others. For instance, flat-faced and short-nosed dogs are more prone to heatstroke because they have difficulty breathing and cooling themselves down. It's the same case for older pets and those with heart, lung, or weight issues.

7. Don't Shave Your Pet's Fur

Are you planning to get your pet a stylish summer cut? That's fine. However, you should only trim their hair, not shave it. Your pet's fur protects them from harmful UV rays and prevents overheating, so shaving will only cause more harm to your furry friend. If necessary, leave the cutting business to the vet to ensure your pet's safety.

If Summer’s Too Hot for You, It’s Hotter for Your Furry Companion

Summer is an excellent time to take pleasure in the outdoor sun, fresh air, and crystal clear water. However, you need to remember that pets and heat don’t mix well; the hot weather can be dangerous for your furry friend. Like us, they are just as vulnerable—if not more—to overheating or dehydration. So take serious precautions to keep them safe and healthy.

Pets rely on us to keep them safe and cool in the summer. Thus, it's our responsibility as pet parents to educate ourselves on what we should or shouldn't do. We hope the tips we shared will raise your awareness and help you enjoy the summer with your furry friend without any worries!
