Aren't dogs a man's best friend? Yes, however, we humans have some actions and behaviors that our pooches find annoying or agitating. If you want to stay your pup's best buddy, you must be aware of the following things you do that irritate your dog without you even realizing it:

Hugging

What you think: Ooh, I'm gonna cuddle with my baby 'coz I love them so much!

What your pup thinks: Ugh, human! You don't have to assert your dominance over me. It's like you're rubbing it on my fur.

News flash! Dogs don't enjoy hugs. For humans, wrapping your arms around your dog is your way of expressing how much you care and adore them. However, this is not the case for your furry canine friend.

According to The Spruce Pets, hugging your dog's neck or body makes them uncomfortable, and they may perceive it as a threat, an act of dominance or control.

How would you know that you're annoying them with your cuddles? Your pup may lean away, yawn, avert his eyes, or lick his lips. Some dogs may tolerate it, but they might turn aggressive towards you if you hug them frequently.

Walk-only policy

What you think: C'mon, Fido! What are you smelling there? Let's continue our walk. You've got to exercise.

What your pup thinks: Hmm, what is this thing? *Sniff* It's kinda earthy-- Why are you pulling my leash, boss? Let me enjoy this walk!

One thing we can learn from dogs is how to be in the moment. They love to take in their surroundings for a few minutes and appreciate the things around them.

That's why your pet dog wags its tail when you show them the "leash." They know that when you grab the leash, it means it's time for their walk.

Let us repeat that.

Their walk. Your dog's walk, and not yours. So please give your friend the freedom to navigate their environment and allow them to explore with their noses. In case you're not aware, canines "see" through their sense of smell and not with their eyes. Simply put, let them have a good time.

Prolonged stare

What you think: *Gazing at your dog with heart eyes*

What your pup thinks: Are you picking a fight with me?

Eye contact is a powerful human gesture. For humans, it's a sign of focus or trustworthiness. However, puppies view it as a sign of dominance or aggression.

"For dogs, a prolonged stare is a signal of confrontation or aggression," says dog behaviorist Colleen Demling in her interview with BestLife. They might assume that you're challenging them.

How would you feel if someone is looking at you without breaking contact? Would you feel creeped out, disturbed, or threatened? That is how your dog may feel, even if you are their loving owner.

Being left alone for a long time

What you think: Ah! Finally home from work. I will grab a glass of wine and got straight to bed--Brownie, why are you eating my slippers!?

What your pup thinks: What took you so long? I'm booooored!

Dogs can suffer from separation anxiety, and they aren't happy spending hours alone. They are social creatures who need companionship as much as you do.

Understandably, you have to work since you need to put their kibble on the table. But be sure to make time to bond with your furry friend when you get home to ease their boredom and loneliness.

If it really can't be helped, leave them in doggie daycare or hire a dependable pet sitter to look after them. Are you rarely at home? Sad to say, but maybe right now isn't the best time to have a pet.

Conclusion

Primates (humans) and canines (dogs) don't think and behave alike. You may think you're showering them with affection; meanwhile, your pup thinks otherwise. Pay attention to their body language to figure out if they're comfortable or not. As a pet parent, you must know the cues when your beloved furry friend feels off so you won't end up confusing or upsetting them.
